Messi contract wait continues, but Xavi says: Leo needs Barca and Barca need Leo

Lionel Messi became a free agent on Thursday, but Xavi believes it is a matter of time before the captain and record goalscorer re-commits to Barcelona.

While away with Argentina at the Copa America, Messi has been focusing on that tournament, and as July arrived there was no word of a new contract at Camp Nou.

That meant his previous deal expired, making Messi potentially available to suitors that may wish to sign him.

Interest from Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain has appeared to go quiet amid an assumption that Messi will stay with Barcelona.

Former team-mate Xavi feels Messi is moving closer to signing again with the Catalans and would put money on the 34-year-old doing so, even if small doubts linger.

This is nowhere near good enough – Man Utd captain Maguire apologetic after derby defeat

Harry Maguire has labelled Manchester United s current form nowhere near good enough following Saturday s derby defeat to Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola s side hardly had to get out of second gear at Old Trafford as an own goal from Eric Bailly and a close-range finish from Bernardo Silva sealed a comfortable 2-0 win.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had enjoyed a good record against Guardiola in previous league derbies, but United mustered just one shot on target throughout the match as they slumped to a fourth defeat in their last six top-flight outings.

City had 67.4 per cent possession and managed 16 attempts to United s five, with David de Gea having to pull off a string of fine saves in the first half.

United are now without a clean sheet in their last 14 home …

Cologne-Mainz match off after referee suicide attempt

Cologne s home game against Mainz has been called off after referee Babak Rafati attempted suicide in his hotel room.

The 41-year-old was due to officiate the Bundesliga game on Saturday, but was found in the morning with his wrists slashed.

Fans and stadium staff were not informed of the news until late, with supporters entering the RheinEnergie Stadion as late as 45 minutes before kick-off.

Cologne s press spokesperson, Tobias Schmidt, confirmed that the game had been cancelled as a replacement referee could not be found in time.

The referee didn t turn up. We were unable to find a replacement at such short notice. We can t make any further comment, Schmidt said.

Marotta confident of Juventus success

Juventus manager director Giuseppe Marotta expressed delight with his club s draw in the UEFA Champions League group stage.

The reigning Italian champions were drawn alongside last season s beaten finalists Atletico Madrid, Olympiacos and Malmo in Group A of the competition.

Juventus has not lifted Europe s top club trophy since 1996 and have endured disappointing campaigns in recent years, but Marotta believes their draw will give them a great chance to start this season s competition well.

We are happy with this draw, he said. We can t say anything different. Champions League, though, is a tournament not a regular league where differences come to surface in the long run.

Here sometimes episodes, in your favour or not, affect final scores. That said, t…

I want to repay Palace fans, says Warnock

Crystal Palace boss Neil Warnock wants to repay the club s supporters – starting with Saturday s home clash against Burnley.

Warnock will lead Palace out at Selhurst Park for the first time since leaving for QPR in 2010 and is sure the occasion will be emotional for him.

The match will signal a return to routine for Warnock and Palace after a two-week international break.

Warnock took the top job at Palace last month but has only seen his side play once – a thrilling 3-3 draw at Newcastle United.

And he is confident the club s new faces – James McArthur, Zeki Fryers and Kevin Doyle all joined just before the transfer window closed – can play a part.

It is bound to be emotional, Warnock said.

I could never forget when I came back …

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is Similar in Scale to Assassin’s Creed Origins, Says Creative Director

Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows looks like a big game, especially since it’s the next mainline open-world title in the franchise, but how does it compare to previous entries? Speaking to IGN, creative director Jonathan Dumont said it’s similar in scale to 2017’s Assassin’s Creed Origins.

“It’s in line with the latest Assassin’s Creeds that we’ve done. On a scale level, maybe we can compare it a little bit more to the size of Assassin’s Creed Origins.” However, there’s a greater focus on “real-life scale ratio” and authenticity.

“We did want to have a much closer to real-life scale ratio. So because castles took a lot of space, and …

Kingdom Hearts 4 Will be a “Reset” for the Franchise, Director Says

The Kingdom Hearts franchise has been notoriously difficult for newcomers to try to get into for as long as anyone can remember, thanks in no small part to the fact that even the most obscure spinoffs end up being crucial to the series’ overarching story. With the upcoming Kingdom Hearts 4, however, it seems like Square Enix is trying to change that.

Speaking recently with Japanese outlet Young Jump, creative director and series mastermind Tetsuya Nomura explained that Kingdom Hearts 4 (as well as mobile title Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link) is being designed as a “reset” that will be easier for new players to get into.

“I do think of Missing Link and 4 as a reset,” Nomura said …
