Valencia 2 Manchester United 1: Jones scores own goal as Red Devils limp through

Manchester United failed to snatch top spot in their Champions League group as they slumped to a 2-1 defeat to Valencia on Wednesday.

Juventus shock loss to Young Boys left the door open for United to go through to the last 16 as winners of Group H, but a Carlos Soler strike and a Phil Jones own goal saw them deservedly lose at Mestalla, although Marcus Rashford netted a consolation.

Jose Mourinho made a number of changes to his starting line-up, with their place in the next round secure and a trip to Liverpool on Sunday looming, and the players on show, including Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku, did nothing to suggest they will keep their spots for that game at Anfield.

The result means little to Valencia, who were already assured of a Europa League place, but the …

Bobb out for ´three or four months´ with leg fracture, Guardiola confirms

Manchester City forward Oscar Bobb will be sidelined for three or four months after fracturing a bone in his leg, Pep Guardiola has confirmed.

It was reported on Wednesday that Bobb had suffered a leg injury in training and would undergo medical tests to discover the full extent of the problem.

He started all five of City s pre-season friendlies as well as their Community Shield victory over Manchester United, and was expected to keep his place for Sunday s Premier League opener at Chelsea.

However, Guardiola confirmed during Friday s pre-match press conference that the Norwegian will miss the first few months of the season, with City hopeful he will return before the turn of the year.

It was in the training session. Unfortunately, he had a big impact a…

Bayern ´going very well´ under Flick amid Guardiola talk, says Neuer

Manuel Neuer would not be drawn on a potential reunion with Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich, saying only that things are going very well under Hansi Flick.

Bayern are without a permanent head coach following Niko Kovac s sacking, with former assistant Flick in caretaker charge for impressive wins over Olympiacos and Borussia Dortmund.

Manchester City manager Guardiola, Bayern coach from 2013 to 2016, could potentially make an incredible return, according to Sport Bild.

Thomas Tuchel, at Paris Saint-Germain, and Erik ten Hag, at Ajax, have each reiterated their commitment to their current clubs, while the report claims Guardiola does not seem happy at City, where he has won back-to-back Premier League titles.

The seemingly unlikely prospect of Guardiola lin…

Prediction: Aston Villa vs Manchester City

As for Pep Guardiola s side, mounting what was a famous European comeback out in Madrid on Wednesday night, there is no doubt that the mood in Manchester City s camp will be at a high. Coming from one goal down to snatch a crucial advantage at the Bernabeu in midweek, the Sky Blues have won each of their last three matches on the bounce since their shock back-to-back defeats against Manchester United and Spurs. While the former Barcelona boss may have seen his side all but relinquish their Premier League title to Liverpool, there is still plenty of silverware left out there for City. Knowing that Sunday is another perfect platform to make another statement, Guardiola could be calling on the red-hot Gabriel Jesus to lead their charge at Wembley. Selected ahead of leading marksman Sergio …

Stoke City 1 Everton 2: Tosun at the double after Adam´s early dismissal

A 10-man Stoke City sank further into relegation peril after Cenk Tosun s brace secured a dramatic 2-1 win for Everton at bet365 Stadium on Saturday.

Tosun netted both goals amid a chaotic 15-minute period in the second half that was split by what seemed to be a vital Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting equaliser.

The Potters had lost Charlie Adam to a straight red card for a loose, late tackle on Wayne Rooney in the 30th minute, giving the Toffees the perfect incentive to pursue a first Premier League away victory in seven attempts.

And they looked to be course when Tosun, in an apparent offside position, poked home his first in the 69th minute.

The home side defied their numerical disadvantage to briefly halve the deficit through Choupo-Moting and inspire hope of …

Marseille confirm Evra suspension after clash with fans

Patrice Evra has been hit with an immediate layoff and could face further sanction after getting involved in an altercation with supporters on Thursday, Marseille have confirmed.

Marseille s players were warming up before their Europa League match with Vitoria Guimaraes in Portugal when Evra was targeted by supporters with unkind chants.

Evra responded by vaulting the advertising boards and confronting the fans, who made their way down from the stands and approached the player.

The defender was carried back over the hoardings by a team-mate, before then aiming a kick at a Marseille fan s head and being dragged away again.

Evra was sent off as a result, becoming the first player to ever receive a red card before kick-off in a Europa League match.

Bale right where he wants to be ahead of Wales´ historic World Cup return

Wales captain Gareth Bale is right where he wants to be ahead of leading his country into their second ever World Cup campaign.

Rob Page s team face the United States on Monday in what is Wales first World Cup match since a quarter-final loss to Brazil in 1958.

Brazil great Pele scored his first goal for the Selecao in that match, becoming the competition s youngest goalscorer (17 years and 239 days) – a record that stands heading into the 2022 edition of the tournament.

Bale comes into the World Cup on the back of coming off the bench to net Los Angeles FC s extra-time equaliser in the MLS Cup, which finished 3-3 against the Philadelphia Union, with LAFC winning on penalties.

After that match in October, the former Real Madrid forward revealed he was s…

Would Upamecano be an upgrade on Alaba and Boateng for Bayern Munich?

If Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich are to overcome second-place RB Leipzig at the Allianz Arena on Saturday, they will need to get the better of a player that could well be lining up for them next season.

Dayot Upamecano has become one of Europe s most sought-after defenders following a string of dominant displays in the German top flight and the Champions League.

With Bayern s centre-back pairing of David Alaba and Jerome Boateng expected to leave at the end of the season, Hansi Flick has been heavily tipped to pay the reported €42m release clause in Upamecano s contract to bring him to Bavaria.

Ahead of what many are billing as the 22-year-old s audition over the weekend, we use Opta data to see if Upamecano would be an upgrade on Bayern s experienced centra…
